Sleeping Beauty

Sleeping Beauty follows the traditional story we know and love - but Aurora herself isn't quite the classic Disney princess you would expect. When a birthday party is held for the princess, the wicked fairy Elvira is furious not to be invited and places a nasty curse on her. Linda the good fairy steps in to soften the curse, instead putting Aurora to sleep for 100 years. The actress playing Aurora isn't thrilled that her role spends most of the show asleep and she does everything possible to increase her stage time. Meanwhile, a handsome prince decides to rescue the princess with true love's kiss, aided by a company of hilarious characters, including a friendly pantomime dame.

Character List

Princess Aurora

Female

18-35

A beautiful princess who pricks her finger and falls asleep in Scene 2. The actress spends most of the show annoyed that her character is asleep and has nothing to do. Princessey and feminine, but also feisty and hot-headed.

Elvira the Wicked Fairy

Female

Any age

Linda the Good Fairy

Female

Linda softens Elvira's curse by putting Aurora to sleep for 100 years instead. She appears throughout to guide the prince towards the princess. Warm, friendly and confident.

Prince Princeton

The handsome prince who embarks on a quest to wake Princess Aurora from her 100-year slumber. He's a bit pompous and gets upset when other characters suggest he isn't handsome enough.

King Howard / Queen Regina

Any gender

40+

Aurora's father / mother. She loves Aurora dearly and is searching for a prince to break the curse. Kind-hearted and often the only voice of reason.

NB. Two versions of this script will be provided, one with King Howard and one with Queen Regina, so that you can cast to your preference.

Ginger Snaps

Dame

Any age

The castle cook. She accompanies King Howard / Queen Regina on their quest to find a prince that can break Aurora's curse. She spends most of the show joking with Fred. Dry and sarcastic.

Fred

Male or Female-as-male

Any age

The castle waiter and a silly-billy character. He is good friends with the dame and makes lots of jokes at her expense. Cowardly, goofy and not particularly bright, but good-hearted.

Bobby

Any gender

Any age

A goodie who works for Linda the Good Fairy, but is also being blackmailed into working for the Wicked Fairy. They are eventually caught out and have to pick a side. Nervous, shrill and awkward.

Ensemble Roles

We recommend performing this show with a junior ensemble, who are split into two groups - good and wicked sprites - for most of the show, and there are a number of lines for individual good and wicked sprites. Ensemble also feature as party guests.

There are two small roles for children: Little Aurora and Bobby's little sister Grizabella.
