Alice in Pantoland

When Alice follows a white rabbit down a hole, she finds herself in magical Pantoland, and her world is changed. Along her journey she will meet much-loved characters from Lewis Carroll's classic book, including the Mad Hatter, March Hare, Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. But when she beats the Queen of Hearts in a game of croquet, she finds herself in a lot of trouble and discovers that the Queen is an evil and frightful ruler. Can she end the reign of the Queen of Hearts?

Character List

Alice

Female

15-25

White Rabbit

Any gender

Any age

The feisty heroine of the story, Alice is far from the meek, mild Disney princess. She explores Pantoland and its crazy cast of characters with a do-it attitude, but is still young and needs some help along the way.

The bubbly rabbit can be a bit brusque, especially when running late, but is the most helpful character Alice will encounter. Always appearing right when he is needed (sort of), he interacts with the audience and is the only one that understands this is a pantomime. He is seen before the show and during the interval, hopping around and getting people to their seats.

Mad Hatter

Any gender

Any age

Hatter is a strange fellow, usually talking nonsense, although sometimes he comes out with a useful bit of advice. Most often seen at his garden with his friends, this friendly and cooky fellow holds the key to defeating the Queen, although he just doesn't know it yet.

March Hare

Any gender

Any age

Hare is the Mad Hatter's dutiful sidekick. Just as nutty, although he does not believe so, he is always thirsty for a cup of tea. When it comes to crunch time however, he can be a bit of a coward.

Queen of Hearts

Dame

Any age

Tweedledum

Any gender

Any age

Tweedledee

Any gender

Any age

Bruno

Female

Any age

The villain. Thwarted by the king when he ran away with another woman, her power is held by a magic staff that can turn anyone into the ugliest version of themselves. A true baddy, she screams "off with your head" at every opportunity.

One half of a comedy double act, they are completely useless and often getting the pair into more danger than they should. Harmless, the pair offer light relief and audience participation throughout the show.

The other half of the double act. Fancies himself as smarter and is livid that their mother put Dum in charge. Resents that they are always in trouble and often lost but is never listened to by Dum.

Bruno is the Queen's henchman, although it is not by choice. She disguised herself to placate the Queen and has been stuck by her side ever since. Smart and sassy, Bruno is torn between her duty to the Queen and her desire to see Pantoland returned to its former glory.

Supporting Roles and Ensemble

This show features three supporting roles, which we recommend casting using ensemble members. Elizabeth (Alice's sister), Cheshire Cat and Absolon feature in two or three scenes each and all have the opportunity for solo singing. Cheshire Cat and Absolon are only in Act 2, so can be ensemble for Act 1.

We recommend performing this show using a junior ensemble, who feature as people in Alice's town, guests at the Mad Hatter's tea party, the Queen of Hearts' guards and jabberwockies.

“There were ripples of guffaws and belly laughs from so many there. Congratulations to COS Musical Theatre on a very special, silly, joyful, hysterical and crazy production.”
